[C4G] Recapping on Create4Good Hackathon 2024

The Create4Good Hackathon, organized by SUTD in collaboration with ESSEC Business School, brought together over 150 participants from various Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) across Singapore for a weekend of innovation and problem-solving. The event aimed to tackle real-world social and environmental challenges, fostering a sense of community and entrepreneurship among the participants.

During the three-day hackathon, participants worked tirelessly on four key problem statements:

  • How might we help elderly improve the quality of their end-of-life care?

  • How might we effectively provide career guidance to women in tech?

  • How might we encourage consumers or businesses to reduce food waste?

  • How might we faciliate sustainable food production in urban areas?

To gain a deeper understanding of these issues, participants had the opportunity to visit the Oasis@Outram and Vidacity and engage with problem statement partners directly. This firsthand experience allowed the participants to develop more targeted and impactful solutions.

The Create4Good Hackathon not only provided participants with opportunity to tackle real-world problems but also serves as a platform for participants to apply their skills and knowledge but also offered an invaluable opportunity for networking and collaboration with like-minded individual from different backgrounds.

During the 2.5 days, the participants demonstrated their creativity and dedication to driving positive change in society through the wide array of solutions they presented. From food-wastage tracking mobile apps to interactive devices for caretakers and elderly, the students showcased their ability to think innovatively and develop practical solutions to address the challenges at hand. Out of all the marvellous solutions, these 2 teams stood out the most.

Lightbox

Addressing the issue of 'End-of-Life Care', a team has devised an innovative solution, Lightbox, to assist elderly individuals in the early stages of dementia who frequently encounter challenges in remembering their medication schedules. This compact device, measuring 6.5cm by 5cm by 2.5cm, serves as a storage unit for medications and illuminates when it's time for the elderly to take their pills. Accompanied by a user-friendly application, caregivers can effortlessly schedule medication timings throughout the day. With the primary objective of overcoming prevalent technological barriers encountered by the elderly, Lightbox aims to streamline the daily task of medication reminders and intake, offering a cost-effective alternative to existing dementia medication reminder services.

The Create4Good Hackathon had served as a testament to the power of youth in shaping a better future. This was made possible thanks to our co-organisers from ESSEC Business School, partners from Oasis@Outram, The Codette Project, Moonbeam and Vidacity, mentors, judges and participants! As the participants continue to refine their ideas and bring their solutions to life, we can look forward to seeing the lasting impact of this event on both the individuals involved and the communities they serve.
